I received a digital camera as a gift a couple of years ago and since then I have enjoyed taking pictures of random stuff from time to time. I also visited the Grand Canyon a couple of years back and took many pictures of that as well. I didn't have my current camera at the canyon so I had to use a low quality camera instead. The pictures still came out alright though.

#1: Palmdale Desert Driving: Taken on May 10th, 2004.

This was taken while I was driving home. It's just a simple picture of the desert. The few green things that try to grow in the springtime die off as soon as summer arrives.
#2: Tumbleweeds: Taken on May 11th, 2004.

For about a month prior to this picture strange winds kept picking up right outside of the house. When these winds occurred the entire house would suddenly shudder and a torrent of howling wind would suddenly blow through the yard and rip up as many plants as it could. Sometimes it could throw tumbleweeds up to 8 feet into the air! Many of the tumbleweeds were blown into this corner of the backyard. Eventually the entire acre of land was completely picked clean of rooted tumbleweeds. I lived at that house for a few years and that month was the only time it ever happened. Another odd thing, all of the adjacent lots were left untouched.
#3: Bugging an Ant Hill: Taken on May 20th, 2004.

I was bored and felt like bothering some ants. I placed a stick in their hole and they had a hard time getting in and out. It was funny watching them start bunching up and trying to squeeze by each other.
#4: Caught Mouse: Taken on May 28th, 2004.

I walked outside and saw a mouse sitting on the ground in the backyard. I thought maybe one of my dogs had killed it because it wasn't moving. I finally leaned in close and it squirmed. I picked it up (wearing gloves) and brought it inside before a dog found it. It was barely bigger than my thumb. I didn't know what to do with it since it didn't seem very good at survival if it let me pick it up with no challenge. I gave it food and water and kept it in my bedroom overnight. It slowly started becoming more animated and by the time I went to sleep it had already escaped the shelter I had made for it. When morning came I found it inside my dirty laundry. I decided to release it, only in a safer location than where it originally was.
#5: Newbury Fire: Taken on July 21st, 2004.

I was now living in Newbury Park. I heard a dog bark so I went outside and saw nothing. A few minutes later I turn around and there is a fire in the hills a few miles away. It sprung up out of nowhere. Helicopters were already starting to drop water within a couple of minutes. After about fifteen minutes or so the fire was already almost dead.
#6: Newbury Fire II: Taken on August 24th, 2004.

It only took a month for another fire to break out nearby. This one was a bit larger at 100 acres. But once again it didn't take long to extinguish.
#7: Newbury Frost: Taken on November 6th, 2004.

There had been some early frost that year.
#8: Tall Weed: Taken on August 7th, 2005.

While living in Camarillo I witnessed a weed starting to grow in the side yard. It went untouched for months and months until it eventually grew taller than the fence itself. It almost grew taller than the house before it was finally "chopped down".
#9: Cat: Taken on September 20th, 2005.

A cat living with us at the time. I liked this shot.
#10: Chatsworth Fire: Taken on September 28th, 2005.

A large fire (I forget how many thousands of acres) broke out near Chatsworth in LA county. It eventually spread into Ventura county and burned a lot of land.
#11: Chatsworth Fire: Taken on September 29th, 2005.

This picture of the fire was taken the next day from Moorpark College. Just the day before small fires broke out right next to and around the college. I have pictures of that but since you can't see much I won't post them. Classes were never cancelled though. Fires are just an ordinary occurrence here!
#12: Chatsworth Fire: Taken on September 29th, 2005.

This picture was taken on my way home. The fire had now spread into Thousand Oaks and near the 23 freeway here. Traffic was unimpeded and the fire never made it to the actual freeway.
#13: Chatsworth Fire: Taken on September 29th, 2005.

Smoke from the fire spreads over my house.
#14: Cat vs. Mirror: Taken on October 13th, 2005.

It's always fun to watch a cat attack itself in the mirror.
#15: Firestorm 2007: Taken on October 21st, 2007.

A ton of fires broke out all around in October 2007. This was as thick as I've seen smoke in this area as there were fires burning in just about every direction. This picture is out back looking over the shed.
#16: Firestorm 2007: Taken on October 21st, 2007.

Along with the fires came a decent amount of wind. Tons of ash, dirt, and leaves poured into the pool making it a mucky mess.
#17: Firestorm 2007: Taken on October 21st, 2007.

The smoke was thick enough to obscure the sun. I could look directly at it just fine. Everything was dark orange for a few days.
#18: Firestorm 2007: Taken on October 21st, 2007.

The nearby hills became hazy as smokey fog settled in over the area. It was difficult to breath all of that gunk outside and it slowly seeped inside as well. *cough*
#19: Firestorm 2007: Taken on October 21st, 2007.

Another backyard shot capturing the pool and the thick haze. Eventually the winds changed directions and the thick smoke cleared out. Small amounts of smoke remained in the sky for quite awhile.
